Experiment

Before creating those beautiful visuals, we did some research. We placed two mirrors facing eachother and one in the middle of them and played around with some basic lights, to see the effect. Although it's very minimal, the results raised my expectations. This zip-file (7,17mb) contains some photo's and a videoclip of the experiment.

Deliverables

Ok, here are the definitive mockups and concept document. Both are downloadable in pdf. Have fun with it!

Mockups

Well, I now present you all the new mockups we made for our Public Space Project. On these mockups you see our installation 'square lights' working on the square we selected: 'de brakke grond'.

As we dutch say: "doe er je voordeel mee". Or for those english readers: "Do yourself some advantage with it!"

Keep it dry!

Well, its not the most beautifull roof you've ever seen, but it keeps you dry! This Roof over a street in Osaka, Japan must be something from the movies or in a themepark. Who else could create such a place? Disney?

Bad (in) Public Space

Well, spring is finally here. And People are getting out in public. Thank god for the one that made the "naveltruitjes" (shirts that give that show a sneak of your belly button!)

This is real bad in Public Space

Assignment 1b: Profile a place

Well, my first assignment is to profile a place. A place I like or dislike. In this case I profile a place I like, offcourse. Not because its more fun to profile a place you like. But it saves me time on the future assignments. :-)

NEMO, DEK5

Actually, I'm not profiling the NEMO-building. I'm profiling its rooftop. Because the Roof, called Dek5, is an public terrace or funsquare. NEMO, as well as other organisations use it to organise events and festivals. Last summer it had an extreme makeover to make it a city-beach.

The NEMO-building is build on top of the IJ-tunnel. Therefore, from a distance it looks like its build on the water. From the high roof-terrace you have a wonderful view over de oosterdok and central station.

Strengths
  • The NEMO (scientific experience museum) has an growing visitorsrate every year. Thats a good base for an public.
  • When the sun shines the rooftop is a great place to sit or lay down and relax. Its a place with a great view and in the summer a breeze helps you cool down.
  • Its not in the middle of the center, but easy too reach. Its a 5 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station.
  • Close too the POST CS building which inherits the Stedelijk CS (museum) , Club 11 and some creative companys.
  • Various events organised every year.

Weaknesses
  • Not easy to reach by car, or not clear and simple found. Its not on, but over an ongoing route. Most visitors (must) plan to go there. They don't "just pass by".
  • Windy, so except from the summer, or sunny days, it feels colder then it is.
